VoIP in Nepal

My wife and I were in Nepal. There is only one telco - and the rate for a call from Katmandu to Toronto was 300 rupees a minute. I went to an Internet café, logged onto a web site and called North America for free! If your computer has a fully duplexed sound card, speakers and a microphone, you too can make phone calls for free across the Internet. The technology is based on a standard called VoIP, voice over Internet Protocol, and is radically changing the telecom industry.
Today its hard to find a free service, but I regularly make calls for 4.5 cents/minute. Whenever I check into a hotel, rather than pay $1 access fee per call plus outrageous long distance rates, I call over the web.
